There are THREE important minimum requirements that we are going to be looking for in our Candidates' Prerequisites:
1. The Candidate must at least meet the minimum standards to be able to qualify for National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Standard 1403; Standard on Live Fire Training Evolution:
OSFM states these FIP Courses must be met to receive this proper Qualification:
- FIP-3001 Orientation & Safety
- FIP-3004 Fire Behavior (Fire Dynamics) (Fire Development in a Compartment)
- FIP-3005 Portable Extinguishers
- FIP-3006 Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- FIP-3007 Forcible Entry
- FIP-3008 Ventilation
- FIP-3010 Ladders
- FIP-3011 Fire Hose, Streams, and Appliances
- FIP-3013 Fire Control (Nozzle Techniques and Door Control)
- FIP 3014 Loss Control (Overhaul)
- FIP-3018 Water Supplies
- FIP-3022 Building Construction
- FIP-3024 Health and Wellness
*(North Carolina State Firefighter, NFPA 1001 Minimum Standard for Firefighter Professional Qualification Certification or [former North Carolina State Firefighter I and Firefighter II Certification] Preferred).
2. The Candidate must have at least North Carolina Office of Emergency Medical Services (NC OEMS) Medical Responder Certification. *(NC OEMS Emergency Medical Technician(EMT) Basic Certification Preferred). NOTE: If the Candidate is not EMT Basic Certified, the Candidate must be able to obtain the proper Certification within a year after being hired with the Kinston Department of Fire and Rescue.
3. The Candidate must have a valid North Carolina Operator License (NCOL) and must be able to obtain at least a NCOL Class B (non-Certified Drivers License [non-CDL]) within Six Months of being hired *(NCOL Class B CDL Preferred but not a requirement).
